Educated in both dentistry (Northwestern University) and medicine (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Dr. Tiwana completed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and internship in General Surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.

While at UNC he also earned a master’s degree in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Subsequently, he completed fellowship training in Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery in Washington DC. In 2010 he was recruited to become the graduate program director of the residency program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He holds the Douglas and Diane Sinn endowed chair and is Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical School and has a joint appointment in Neurological Surgery as well. Dr. Tiwana is also the Division Director of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Children’s Health System of Texas and Medical Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

As a published author, Dr. Tiwana has contributed numerous journal articles and book chapters to the professional scientific literature. He is also co-editor of the acclaimed textbook Atlas of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
